“Baby Friendly” Sex Shop In NYC

On the one hand, I’ve got to hand it to these creative business owners. But on the other hand, I’m not for taking babies/small children to sex shops.

Owners of the Babeland store in Brooklyn, New York, said the shop was designed to take the seediness out of the sex industry and allow busy working mothers to shop in their lunch hour.

The shop, which sells “Sexy Moms” lingerie, sex toys and bondage gear, has caused up roar in the family-friendly Park Slope district of the city. Local resident Anthony Vedetta said: “It’s completely unmoral, it’s unclassy. It shouldn’t be here.”

{snip}

Mrs Cavanah aims to make women feel empowered, not embarrassed about sex. She also plans to run workshops for new mothers and classes on having a “sex-positive” family.

First off, what the heck is “Sexy Mom’s” lingerie? How is it different from anything you would find in a nice store like La Petite Coquette, which has been in Greenwich Village for as long as I can remember. Are they just in bigger sizes? Or are the front of the bras detachable for nursing?

Also, what is this business about not being embarrassed by sex? This is New York City. The problem is that most women (and men) have no shame about sleeping around. In fact, 26% of NYC residents have genital herpes.

    The article actually screwed up. We don’t sell any lingerie at Babeland, let alone stuff for sexy moms. I don’t really know where they got that idea from.

    It’s also interesting to me that this whole thing has gotten framed as being “kid friendly” when really it’s “parent friendly”. We’re not giving sex toys to children, we’re helping parents have fun. Leave it to the media to totally distort something like that.

    I also completely agree with your point about NYC. I’m not sure exactly why this was such a big uproar. Nothing like this happened when the store in Soho opened…

    What I don’t understand is why a “busy working mother” has her baby or child with her during her lunch hour. Seems to me the child would be in daycare or school.

    The only time a MOM can be real sexy is when her and her spouse take off on a weekend vacation without the kids……..

    Have you seen the cartoon where Mom is on the carphone to hubby: “I just dropped off the kids at school, and I’m going to get the station wagon serviced — after that I’m going to the grocery. Am I making you hot?”

    Quiz: Think of a country where women are not free to express sexuality, but do have political and economic freedom. Hint — there aren’t any.

    Sorry, I don’t get it. Email me if you like.

    Thanks for that disgusting statistic.
